Degree & Application Information

In order to have a successful application, it is important to understand the application process in our department.
The responsibility rests with the applicant to ensure all documents required are submitted by our deadline. Please carefully review all responses. Once an application is submitted, it is not possible to make changes unless you contact The School of Graduate and PostDoctoral Studies or The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.
Admission Criteria for each Degree
Consideration to the Accelerated MESc
- The Accelerated MESc is designed to encourage the very top students in MME, to complete the MESc in a format that will only require one extra year of study beyond obtaining the BESc.
- This program is offered to current 3rd year Western Engineering students and in order to be accepted into the Accelerated MESc, an applicant must have an admission average of 78% cumulative average based on 2nd and 3rd years of the undergraduute program.
- For dual-degree students, the admission average is calculated based on 2nd and 3rd years of the Engineering program.
- More information available here
Consideration to the MESc
- Minimum four (4) year (or equivalent) Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a recognized university.
Consideration to the PhD
- Minimum four (4) year (or equivalent) Bachelor's degree PLUS a Master's (thesis/research) degree in Engineering from a recognized university.
Consideration to 2+2 Joint PhD
- Minimum four (4) year (or equivalent) Bachelor's degree in Engineering from a recognized university.
General Criteria
- 70% or B- (North American Equivalent) in order to be considered admissable for the Professional MEng Program.
- 78% or B+ (North American Equivalent) in order to be categorized as fundable for the MESc/PhD.
- Assessment is based on the last two years of full-time study, or the last twenty courses.
- Equivalency conversion to Western's scale is taken from various university grade conversion scales as per university regulation.
- Factors that may also be considered may include publication record, industrial experience, and merit.
- Note all students accepted into the MESc/PhD research program receive financial support that covers tuition fees and basic living expenses.
Funding Support
Funding support is provided from a variety of sources for eligible students who meet funding criteria and can differ from student to student. The variety of sources may include scholarships, graduate fellowships, part-time employment such as a graduate teaching assistantship. Amounts represent approximate minimum funding (tuition amounts are estimated and may be adjusted) an awardee is expected to receive in each category. Amounts posted may be subject to change.
Funds may sometimes be unevenly distributed each term, and a graduate student is expected to budget his/her finances.
Funding is contingent upon maintaining a minimum 78% cumulative average and satisfactory progress in research.
There is no guarantee of funding beyond the periods stated below. The graduate student should discuss this with the supervisor. The "total from Western" includes funding from research grants.
